Ref-name inputs only validated after the fact, so a space typed or pasted into a branch name showed "Branch name contains invalid characters" and disabled Create. Branch-name fields (New Branch, from a revision and in several repositories, Rename Branch, New Worktree, GitHub New Remote Branch) now clean the name while typing: forbidden characters are dropped and whitespace becomes '-', without stacking separators, keeping the caret in place. Shared via src/platform/gitRefName.ts and the useSanitizedField hook in src/ui.

The confirmation body joined the English question and the file list into one string, which never matched a catalog entry. The question is now translated on its own before the list is appended.
The diff and merge viewers had no overview lane, so changes outside the viewport were invisible. The scrollbar now marks every change, coloured by type (modified, inserted, deleted, conflict), in the side-by-side view (both panes), the aligned view (one stripe over the shared scroller), the unified view and the three-way merge editor; clicking a mark jumps to the change. Marks span the lane's width from the first to the last changed line with a 2px minimum. The colours are new --diff-*-stripe theme tokens (Darcula, Light and High-contrast values), mapped from ERROR_STRIPE_COLOR on .icls import and set in the Harbor Night theme template.

In a Unity project, Add File to Git for a new asset under Assets/ now takes its .meta along: an untracked .meta that already exists is listed in the same confirmation, and one Unity writes later is added once the asset's addition has succeeded. The ask / silently / never setting applies as before; pending metadata is dropped when the asset is unstaged or deleted, or the project or repository changes. File-operation paths are compared in IPC form, so they match the status paths on Windows.

A successful commit cleared every inclusion override in the Commit tool window, so files the user had unchecked fell back to included and could go into the next commit by accident. commitChanges now drops the overrides (checks and per-file block exclusions) only for the changes that went into the commit; files left out stay excluded.

Refreshing the combined Git Log of several repositories merged every repository's prefetched candidates into the result, so 300 loaded rows could grow into thousands and the graph layout took seconds. A refresh now keeps the loaded window through its last surviving commit (plus new arrivals); older history comes in with paging as before. Commit selection no longer rebuilds the layout when linear-history collapsing is off, and current-branch highlighting uses the backend's reachability, falling back to a single traversal from all heads.

Tool window titles, the main toolbar widgets (project, branch, run configuration) and the Commit view's group labels were semibold, which made the chrome look heavy. They now use the regular weight; module roots in the Project view stay bold.

* perf(vcs): filter the Git log with git log instead of a background search index
The log built a persistent inverted index of every commit's message, authors and
changed paths in the background, with a progress bar above the commit list, and
walked trees itself to filter by path. Building it took minutes on large
repositories, and filters were slow until it finished.
- Text: plain text uses `git log --fixed-strings --grep` (with
`--regexp-ignore-case` unless Match Case is on); text of 4+ hex digits also
matches hash prefixes. Regex filters still match in-process.
- Paths: `git log -- :(literal)<paths>` replaces the in-process path walk and
its per-commit tree cache. It uses git's history simplification and, when the
repository has a changed-path commit-graph, its Bloom filters. Glob characters
in a path are literal.
- Authors match against the commit metadata cache.
- Removed the search tables, `index_log`, the `vcs_log_index` command and the
indexing progress bar. The commit metadata cache stays.
* docs(contributing): ask for screenshots only when a change alters what users see
Removing a feature together with its UI, copy-only and non-visual changes now
describe what was checked instead of attaching before/after screenshots.
* fix(vcs): match case-insensitive non-ASCII Git log text in process
git folds case only for ASCII under the C locale it runs with, so a
case-insensitive filter like "ärger" missed "Ärger". Such text is now
matched against commit messages directly. Path and text selection also
ignore log.showSignature and log.follow from the user's config.
The worktree whose path is the window's repository root gets a check before its branch (Current worktree); drive paths compare case-insensitively. Branch names keep their width and the path is cut short instead.
With many outgoing commits the Push dialog grew to the full screen height and its
whole body scrolled besides the changed-files tree, because the body was not a flex
container and the commit list's flex had no effect. The single- and multi-repository
Push dialogs now open at most 720px tall with the commit list filling the rest and
scrolling on its own; Dialog gets a maxHeight that applies until the user resizes.

The Changes view's Delete… for unversioned files had no key. When every selected

group still deletes the changelist.

Show Diff (Cmd+D) in the Commit window or the Git window's Local Changes opened the
file still selected in the Project view, which keeps its selection while another view
has focus, instead of the change selected in the tree. Show Diff and Compare with
Branch or Revision now take the action's paths first, then the changes tree's
selection while it has focus, then the Project view's selection, then the active file.

Right-clicking a line or the line numbers of a diff pane now offers Annotate with
Git Blame / Close Annotations. Each side is blamed on its own history: a revision on
that revision (at the path the file had there), the index on HEAD with its own text,
and the working file like the editor's annotations, refreshed after edits and when
HEAD moves. Compare Files, Local History and plain-text sides don't offer it. The
divider between the panes, which had no menu, acts on the pane focused last.
Fixes#1443
The selection is drawn in a layer behind the text, so any range with its own background (find
matches, warnings in light schemes, usages, semantic backgrounds) hid it: selected text there
kept its yellow or other highlight. Selected text is now also marked in the innermost span with
the selection colour, in text editors, notebook cells and the VCS viewers.
Agent conversations: an editor tab mounts only while it is active, so switching back to a
task rebuilt the whole conversation, parsed and sanitized every message again, and fetched
all entries again, which replaced them and rendered everything a second time. Loaded entries
are already kept current by the task's events, so they are no longer fetched again; rendered
Markdown is cached by text; and a conversation opened at its end renders its last 40 entries
first and the earlier ones in batches behind it (all at once when a scroll position or Find
needs them).
Git log: with branch-aware layout (#1076) a commit's lane was its branch's global layout
index, so a repository with many branches drew lanes dozens of columns apart, joined by
diagonals across the row. Each row boundary and node level is now packed side by side in
layout order; adjacent rows share their boundary, so lines stay joined. The column header row
is hidden by default and can be shown from View Options › Columns › Column Headers, where
columns are resized and reordered.
Lane changes bent within half a row as S-curves. A lane change and the vertical half of the neighbouring row that continues it now meet halfway between the lanes, so edges between adjacent rows run straight from node to node; only drawn positions change. Fixes#800
Selecting one outgoing commit shows its message, revision, author and time above its files; a Group by Directory toggle switches the files between tree and flat list and is remembered. Fixes#1373
Tree names in the Commit and Shelf windows were capped at 75% of the row, so long folder names were truncated with empty space left over. Names now take the whole row and the grey detail after them is truncated first. Fixes#1367
Git Log could lose commits when filtering by several paths, draw wrong
ancestry after filtering or collapsing rows, and open the wrong
repository in multi-root views. The graph is now projected over the full
commit DAG and laid out in Bek order, so filtered and collapsed views keep
the real ancestry; each log view keeps its own filters and requests.
Commit metadata, messages and path changes are kept in a persistent index
(by object id, in the IDE's cache directory) with seekable paging, and the
log gains parent-aware merge comparisons, a lazy revision browser,
read-only logs of repositories outside the project (opened with command
execution disabled), commit bookmarks, configurable built-in columns and
batched commit details. The adapted IntelliJ algorithms are attributed in
THIRD_PARTY_LICENSES.md.

An empty commit message field now starts with the file `commit.template`
names (any git config level; `~/` and repository-relative paths resolve
as git resolves them), without its `#` comment lines, since commits keep
the message as written. It is filled when the repository opens or
changes and when a commit clears the field; a typed message is never
replaced, and a prepared merge / cherry-pick / revert message still
takes precedence.

Git › Show History for Selection, as in IDEA: from Git › Current File and the editor's Git menu it opens a tab with only the commits that changed the selected lines (or the caret line), newest first, and the block before and after each commit in the diff viewer. Only Show History for the whole file existed before. git log -L tracks the lines across renames; the selection is first mapped through unsaved and uncommitted edits to HEAD's lines, and those edits come first as Local Changes. The query is its own ide-vcs module and cancellable command (vcs_block_history), read-only and allowed in Restricted Mode (--no-ext-diff --no-textconv).

Unversioned files in the commit view could be added or ignored but not deleted. Their context menu now offers Delete…, as IDEA's Changes view does: it asks first and moves the files to the Trash, only when every selected file is unversioned.
Show History picked its repository with repoOf, which routes a nested repository's own root to the enclosing repository (right for the commit view's submodule pointer), so a submodule folder listed its gitlink history in the parent repository. A repository's own root now opens that repository's history, as in IDEA; other paths still use the innermost repository.

New Branch dropped its suggestion when validateBranchName rejected it, and the current branch always exists, so a plain New Branch from HEAD always opened empty; the test never seeded the local branches. The suggestion is kept, the dialog shows that the branch exists from the start and Create stays disabled until the name changes; other prefilled prompts (Rename Branch) keep showing errors only after editing.
The find bar belonged to the pane and every bar shared one query, and its effect re-ran the search and moved the caret whenever the active tab changed, so switching files dragged the previous file's search into the next one and lost its caret. Each tab now has its own find bar with its own query and options, as with IDEA's per-editor search session. The last search only pre-fills a newly opened bar (or the selection does) and drives Find Next without a bar; showing a bar again only highlights, and the caret moves only when the query or an option changes in that bar. Bars of closed tabs are dropped.

Scroll containers set cursor: text, and the webview applies an element's cursor to its scrollbar, so scrollbars showed the I-beam. Icon themes could only map files by exact name or extension and folders by name. Themes can now match by regular expression or path (patterns that could backtrack badly, lookaround, inline flags and named groups are refused at install), ship dark variants, replace built-in UI and symbol (PSI) icons, and offer packs (groups) and variants (choices). A theme describes its own options page in Settings › Plugins as sections of items naming options the IDE implements (hide file/folder/UI/PSI icons, hollow folders, accent, monochrome, saturation, opacity, icon size, row height); values are stored per theme in appearance.fileIconThemeOptions. Existing themes are unchanged.

Sync with Deployed opens in its own window, one per project window. It lists local files next to the server's copies, with filters, content and binary comparison, and an embedded side-by-side diff whose local side can be edited. The selected file can be synchronized (Enter) without closing the window.
The window is the `deployment` kind of the auxiliary windows that Settings and comparisons use. A cancelled close in it stops its project window from closing. The preview uses the vcs diff viewer through its `diff` editor kind. Also covers #811 (compare with the deployed versions).

Compare with Local, Compare Versions and the other revision comparisons open in a separate window that belongs to their project window. The window can be moved outside the main window, resized from its edges and corners, and shows the full diff. Edits made there and in the project window are mirrored both ways.
Root cause of #798: the comparison was an in-window dialog with a fixed size.
Settings and comparison windows now share one auxiliary-window mechanism (`AuxKind`, `open_auxiliary_window`). It handles labels, the title bar, placement over the parent, event forwarding, document-edit mirroring, menu routing, closing together with the parent, and remembered geometry per kind.

Git operations passed their title, success and failure text to runOp / runGitOperation as plain strings the text catalog check doesn't see, so notifications after a commit, merge, rebase, stash, shelve, tag, patch or rollback stayed in English, several splicing plurals or English words. Call sites now tag the text with tx, each count and variant has its own sentence, and a failure is titled "{title} failed" from the translated title.
The Clone Repository dialog lists GitHub next to Repository URL: the repositories of the account gh is signed in to, searchable; picking one fills URL and directory, double-click or Enter clones. Clone URL follows gh's git_protocol. Clone sources are a workbench contribution (registerCloneSource); gh_account_repos needs no project.
Closes#750
The project tree's Delete question was concatenated from English fragments, and the VCS prompt / multi-choice labels and the shortcut recorder placeholder were rendered as given, so they stayed English in the Chinese UI. The question is now tx templates with zh entries; the labels and placeholder go through the catalog.
A plain New Branch (single and multi-repository) now opens with the current branch name, like JetBrains IDEs, so a related branch is an edit away; detached HEAD stays empty. New Branch from a local ref now applies its <ref>-copy suggestion, which was computed but never used.

Clicking a repository in the Repository filter menu checks or unchecks it instead of replacing the selection, so the log shows any subset of the project's repositories; unchecking the last one shows all.
Below the outgoing commits, the Push dialog lists the files they change: all outgoing commits' combined changes by default, or the selected commit's (Show All Commits goes back). Selecting a file shows its diff beside the tree inside the modal dialog. The multi-repository Push dialog does the same for the selected repository or commit.
With a User or text filter, the Git Log graph opened a lane for every commit whose parent the filter hid; the lanes never closed and filled the graph with arrows, since git keeps the real parents for these filters.
The log now links each shown commit to its nearest shown ancestors, dashed where the link passes hidden commits (the date range and No Merges count as hidden there too); a page's last commits are linked by walking on past the page. Collapse Linear Branches keeps those dashed links.
Fixes#872
A project folder that holds several git repositories without being one itself showed "No GitHub repository" in Pull Requests: every gh command ran in the project folder.
The GitHub remotes now come from each of the project's git repositories, and each remote remembers its repository. gh commands take the repository to run in (the primary one when none is given), and checkout, diff, worktree, merge, push, suggestions and new pull requests use the connected repository.

Commit view › Group By gains "Staging State". When it is on, Changes splits into Staged Changes and Unstaged Changes; a partially staged file appears in both, and its diff compares HEAD with the Index under Staged and the Index with the working copy under Unstaged. On macOS, with an editable element focused and an input method active, WebKit can deliver a tap as pointerup then pointerdown, so drag trackers saw every later pointermove as a held button: one tap plus a pointer move started a phantom drag (file drag label, tab detach, tool window move) and the next tap dropped it. A drag now starts only from a move with the primary button down, a move without it cancels the press, and late button-less moves after a drag started are ignored so the drop is kept. Resizers, dialog drag/resize, pan and the review gutter end instead; the Project view also listens for pointercancel.

Diff tabs, including the preview tab, get Maximize Editor / Restore Size in their toolbar (reusing Hide All Tool Windows). `@{u}..HEAD` fatally fails when the tracking config remains but the
remote-tracking ref is gone (the upstream branch was deleted on the
remote and the fetch pruned): the repository was dropped from the
multi-repository Push dialog, or, when every repository failed, the
dialog showed the raw fatal and disabled Push. Fall back to recent
history like the single-repository dialog does, so the branch stays
listed and pushable (a plain push recreates the remote branch).
In Chinese the Update Project notification read "已在 2 commits 中更新 3 files" and the Hot Swap result "已重新加载 3 classes". Both sentences were translated, but the counts inside them were English phrases passed in as placeholder values, which are only looked up as exact catalog entries.
Each count is now its own source text per variant (`{count} file` / `{count} files`, `{count} commit` / `{count} commits`, `{count} class` / `{count} classes`), built in the current language before it goes into the sentence. These were the only two places where a translated sentence receives an English count phrase as a value.
After a push the notification only said "Push successful". It now says what went out, for example "Pushed 3 commits to origin/main", counting the commits the branch was ahead of its upstream before the push. This covers Push and pushing a branch to its own upstream. A push across several repositories stays generic unless exactly one of them had commits to send. The title is translated as a whole for each count.
