Configurations created for a main class, and the Spring Boot applications
detected in a module, set their working directory to the module directory.
A relative path in the VM options (such as --module-path=app/server/target/dependency)
then resolved against the module and the JVM failed to start. They now leave the
working directory empty, so the process starts in the project root, which is what
an empty working directory means elsewhere. The module is still stored separately
and keeps supplying the classpath and the debugger's sources.
Fixes#1197
A Java file outside a Maven / Gradle build ran as `java File.java` (JEP 330), which launches the file's first top-level type on JDK 21 and earlier. A file whose main is in a later class failed with "can't find main(String[]) method in class: Parent", and the gutter Run of a second or nested class's main launched the first class. Such files now compile with the JDK's own `javac -g -d <class dir>` and run `java -cp <class dir> <main class>`; a main in the first class, and compact source files, still use the source launcher. Debug passes the JDWP agent through JDK_JAVA_OPTIONS, which only the java launcher reads.

TestNG's class-level @Test makes the class's public void methods tests; the scanner now recognizes them (excluding @Before*/@After*/@DataProvider/@Factory). Test results locate TestNG failures past org.testng frames and parse TestNG's comparison message. Refs #1368
Gradle's console names a test class by its simple name and a JUnit 5
method by its display name (`method()`), while its XML reports use the
qualified class and the method name. After a run the test tree showed
each class twice, counted the failure twice, and the report's copy of
the failing test had no source location.
Console results are now moved under the reported class (when the simple
name is unambiguous), Gradle method names drop the empty `()`, and the
report's stack frame is matched for Kotlin names with spaces and frames
behind a class loader prefix (`app//`).
The JVM run-target scanner only reads the file's own text, so a class like `class App extends AtomStarter {}`, whose superclass (in the project or a library JAR) declares `static main`, got no gutter Run, no Ctrl+Shift+R and no file-level Run, although the JVM launches it. Classes with an `extends` clause and no main of their own are now candidates: the superclass chain is walked through the language server's type hierarchy, each class supertype's source (file, decompiled or source-jar document) is checked for a static main, and the answer is cached per class and `extends` clause, so the gutter, Run from context, launch and debug agree. Interfaces are skipped (a static interface main is not inherited); negative answers are asked again when the server settles. `main(java.lang.String[] a)` is accepted as well.

Temporary run configurations were kept with what settings derived when they were made (absolute mvn, -s / -Dmaven.repo.local, JAVA_HOME), and never went through the backend again, so after a Maven home / settings file / JDK change they and gutter test runs narrowed from them still ran the old ones. They are now kept without derived values (run_without_derived) and get the current settings applied when the run list loads (run_apply_settings). Maven's settings file and local repository apply to every Maven configuration unless it sets them itself. Earlier stored entries are dropped once.
Refs #822
The Gradle model came from a static parse of settings.gradle, which cannot follow includeFlat, projectDir assignments, computed include lists or included builds, so those modules were missing from the Gradle tool window, the Project view, indexing and run. Sync now runs an init script that prints every evaluated project (identity path, directory, build directory, source sets with test classification, Java version) without resolving dependencies; the static parser stays as the fallback before the first sync. Modules outside the root become content roots, the Project view lists the build's module group above the project folder, an unsynced Gradle build is imported once when opened, and staleness ignores comments and whitespace in build scripts.
Application / Spring Boot configurations of a Gradle module run through a JavaExec task on the source set's runtime classpath by default (Settings › Build Tools › Gradle › Build and run using), with the debugger attached to the forked JVM. The build model reaches run and the Project view through a platform store rather than a cross-feature import.

Running or debugging a main class from the editor, gutter or Project view now selects an existing saved Application or Spring Boot configuration of the same main class and module, keeping its VM options, environment and profiles, instead of creating a temporary one.

Spring Boot configurations get -Dspring.output.ansi.enabled=always: the Run console renders ANSI colours, but Spring only enables them for a terminal and the process runs on pipes. A configuration that sets the property keeps its value.

Kotlin line breakpoints never verified through java-debug because jdtls cannot resolve classes for .kt files. Kotlin Application configurations and JDWP attach for modules with Kotlin sources now use the official Kotlin Debug Adapter (installable from the debugger prompt, running on the language-server JDK); pure Java keeps java-debug.
The adapter resolves classes from source paths, so sources whose directories don't match their package are mirrored package-aligned outside the project (symlinks, copies where links fail) and paths are mapped back for breakpoints and stack frames; files that can't be mirrored are skipped rather than failing the session. Kotlin applications start with JDWP suspend=y and a session-owned JDWP relay holds the adapter's early resume until attach completes, so breakpoints are installed before the program runs.
Limitations (docs/kotlin-debugging.md): @file:JvmName facades are not resolved; package/source-root changes need a new session. Not verified on a real Windows machine.
Fixes#374
java-debug runs inside jdtls and is reached through its debugServer port, but configurations that aren't Application / Spring Boot and select java-debug (a Shell Script running `catalina.bat run`, say) fell through to the generic launch template, and the adapter launcher tried to start com.microsoft.java.debug.plugin.jar as a process: on Windows that failed with os error 193, elsewhere with a misleading "debug adapter not found".
- Shell script / program configurations with java-debug start with a suspended JDWP agent injected through JAVA_TOOL_OPTIONS and attach once the JVM prints its port, so `catalina.bat run` / `catalina.sh run` can be debugged.
- Maven goals that run the app in Maven's JVM (tomcat7:run, jetty:run(-war), exec:java, or any Maven config with java-debug) are debugged through MAVEN_OPTS.
- Gradle tasks that start no JVM say why they can't be debugged; `debug.startConfig` with a single debuggable config goes through the run debug flow.
- .jar adapters are never spawned as processes, and Windows adapter lookup only accepts PATHEXT files (so npm-installed adapters pick the .cmd shim instead of the POSIX one); the PATHEXT expansion moves to ide_core::process::executable_names, shared with ide-run.
Not run on Windows; the Windows resolution is covered by tests with an injected platform.

Run oxfmt once over the whole repository (formatting only, no logic changes) and add `pnpm format:check` to the frontend CI job so unformatted code no longer builds up. `.oxfmtrc.json` now skips the generated theme docs, test fixtures and code blocks inside Markdown.

Root cause: every java launch inlined the whole classpath into one -cp argument with no "Shorten command line", so long classpaths exceeded CreateProcessW's 32767-char limit (os error 206) before the JVM started.
Fix (IDEA's auto "Shorten command line"): ide-run rewrites a too-long java command line at spawn time — @argfile on JDK 9+ with ASCII paths, otherwise a MANIFEST pathing jar (percent-encoded file: URLs, 72-byte lines); temp files are removed when the process exits. Debug passes the same choice to java-debug's shortenCommandLine.
Siblings covered: Application/Spring Boot, test classpath, Kotlin main, explicit java -cp configs, profiler, PTY launches, Debug.
Verified: unit tests, pathing jar loaded by real JDK 8/11/25, ProcessManager integration test with 3000 entries on JDK 8/17/25. Not verified on Windows.

- Gutter icons show the last test result; Modify Run Configuration; test tree
hides passed tests, context menu and assertion diff
- Stack frames resolve by fully qualified class name; context run chooser
- Inline Smart Step Into
- Git Log multi-select filters, "me" and date range; favourite branches,
Fetch and tags in the branch popup; stash Keep index and Unstash options
- Terminal tab titles follow the shell; Distraction Free persists; gear menu;
sticky balloons move to the notifications tool window after a while
* fix(vcs): Label restored local changes as yours after Smart Checkout; name the branch checked out
Conflicts from restoring stashed changes show the user's uncommitted
changes on the left like other operations, and the checkout notification
names the new branch instead of the previous one.
* fix: Close the merge editor on Apply; confirm before terminating a running Run tab
Like IDEA, applying a merge result closes its tab, and closing a Run tab
whose process still runs asks before terminating it (with a Settings
toggle and "Do not ask again").
* fix(terminal): Don't start a new session in the background after closing the last tab
The hidden Terminal window stays mounted, so it reopened a session as soon
as the last tab closed. It now opens the Local tab only once the window is
shown again, as IDEA does.
* fix(vcs): Start the merge result from a three-way merge; close the editor on Apply
The result pane now begins with non-conflicting changes merged and each
conflict showing the base text, resolved from the side panes, instead of
raw conflict markers. Apply now reports success, so the tab closes.
fix(search): Match File Structure filter on word starts
* fix: Limit Smart Step Into to the paused line; drop usages hints on callbacks; show full intention titles
Adapters that list every remaining call in the function (debugpy) made Smart
Step Into fall back to a chooser that offered calls from later lines. Targets
are now narrowed to the calls on the paused line, so they are picked in place.
Anonymous functions and callbacks no longer get a 'no usages' hint, and
intention titles are no longer cut short when there is room for them.
* fix: Undo / Redo from the Edit menu and Find Action use the editor's history
They ran the webview's native undo, which misses programmatic edits such as
templates, completion and refactorings, so nothing happened in the editor.
* fix(java): Run jdtls with a Lombok agent and show build errors at launch
jdtls compiles with ECJ, which only generates Lombok members when the
server JVM runs -javaagent:lombok.jar. Nothing put it there, so @Data /
@Setter classes lost their accessors and Run launched stale classes
with "Unresolved compilation problem" stubs and no explanation.
- Projects whose build files mention Lombok get the newest jar: the
IDE-managed one (new "Lombok (jdtls agent)" tool, latest release from
Maven Central), else ~/.m2 (incl. settings.xml localRepository) or the
Gradle cache. Each agent gets its own jdtls workspace so everything is
rebuilt with it.
- Settings › Languages & Frameworks › Java › JVM options
(java.jdt.ls.vmargs); a Lombok agent there wins.
- Run (and Debug, as a notification) list the first compile errors when
the build has errors, plus a hint when Lombok is missing or older than
1.18.34.
Fixes#3
* fix(java): Base the Lombok hint on the agent jdtls actually runs
A Lombok agent in Settings › Java › JVM options wins over the managed
and cached jars, but the launch hint still looked only at those: with
no cached jar it said Lombok was missing, and with an old cached one it
blamed that version although jdtls ran the user's. The hint and the
startup warning now use the user's agent (version from its file name).
