A dev container's ports can be forwarded: the Ports tool window shows in a dev container window, `forwardPorts` of devcontainer.json are forwarded on open (keeping the local number when free, falling back otherwise), and ports forwarded by hand are restored per folder and configuration. Each forwarded connection is a loopback listener whose connections run `docker exec … openidea-server --connect localhost <port>` through the container's own network, so no published ports or extra tools in the image are needed. The container tunnel lives in `ide-remote::container_tunnel`; tunnels own their connections and Docker children, so stopping a forward, closing the window or losing the connection leaves no listeners or processes behind (the same ownership fix applies to SSH forwards).

Read Include, Match (host/user/exec), Key=Value, ProxyCommand with % tokens, StrictHostKeyChecking and UserKnownHostsFile from ~/.ssh/config, connect over a ProxyCommand's stdio, and try none authentication first in OpenSSH mode. accept-new records unknown host keys and still refuses changed ones; Match exec runs off the async runtime with a 10 s limit.
The IDE backend is uploaded by streaming it into `gzip -dc > file` on the
host. When that command exits early (no gzip, a folder it cannot write, a
full disk), it stops reading: once the channel window (about 2 MB) is
used up, the next write waited for window space forever, so Remote
Development stayed on "Installing the IDE backend on the host…" at a few
percent and never showed the host's error. Each write, and closing the
input, now races the command's exit; an early exit ends the upload with
the command's status and stderr.

Remote windows get a Ports tool window: forward localhost:<port> of the remote host to this machine (same port when free here), with Open in Browser / Copy / Stop. Forwarded ports are remembered per host and folder and forwarded again on reconnect. Tunnels reuse the window's SSH session (ide_ssh::Tunnel can prefer a local port) and close with the connection.
